How to use background removal in templates

Once background removal is turned on, any product image in a template can show the cutout instead of the original photo.

Choose the background for an image

1. Open your template and select the product image.
2. In the Style panel, find Background and pick one of the three options.

• Original shows the photo as it is, background included.
• Removed shows the product without its background, at the size it has in the photo.
• Cropped removes the background and trims the empty space around the product, so the product fills the image box.

Only Image 1 gets its background removed. If you set Image number to Image 2 or higher, that image keeps its background, and the editor tells you so.

When the preview shows the original photo

If the product you preview with has no usable cutout yet, the editor shows the original photo and marks Removed and Cropped with a warning. That happens while the image is still queued, or when it was rejected. Click Check the background removal status here to see the image, or preview the template with another product.

Which image each product gets

A product shows its cutout once the cutout is ready. Until then, and whenever its cutout is rejected, the template uses the original photo, so products never end up without an image.

When a cutout counts as ready depends on your default strategy:

• With Include by default, a cutout is ready as soon as the background is removed. You can still reject it later.
• With Exclude by default, a cutout is ready only after you approve or fix it.

To show the template only on products whose cutout is ready, filter on the Background removal status field. See Include products where background removal is ready.
